How to Grow a Survival Garden in an Urban Area
All You Need is Some Dirt!
Learning how to grow a survival garden in an urban area or with a small gardening space can be very fun.
As long as you have some dirt and spaces along side your house you can grow stuff.
If you don't have that, there is always container gardening or indoor gardening.
Growing a large garden and caring for an acre of vegetables is kind of the 'in' thing to do right now for preparedness planning, but you can grow a very significant survival garden with tight spaces as well.

Survival Gardening in Your Back Yard
If for some reason you don't have access to any soil around the outside perimeters of your home,
and if there is no dirt anywhere that you can stick a plant or seeds into, but have a porch or deck, there are always buckets and boxes that can be set up with dirt.
I had a friend that grew AMAZING tomatoes in containers on your deck.
Regardless what YOUR situation is, there is always a way to do some survival gardening.
I would suggest getting open pollinated or non-hybrid seeds to do survival gardening, or at least to have on hand for survival purposes.
Learning how to grow plants in backyard areas has so many options, and this will hopefully get your gardening juices flowing...
Some Other Things to Plan for in Survival Gardening
One thing to look for when trying to decide where to start growing plants is sunshine.
Although you can grow plants almost anywhere as long as you can get water to them, having sufficient sunshine will be a huge asset, especially if you are a green horn at learning the 'green thumb'. =)
The south or east side of your house will usually work best as far as getting enough sunshine. If there is too much sun , not enough wind and it gets really hot in those areas, you may want to consider building some makeshift shade shelters.
Making a garden shade can be as simple as setting a few pieces of lumber on several cement blocks, especially for something like lettuce that is usually not very heat tolerant, plus is a short plant.
Usually in late summer I will set up a simple 'lumber shade cover' for my lettuce plants. They love it under there!
You can use various methods when looking at how to grow a survival garden in your backyard.
- Containers
- Raised Beds...this is actually a GREAT way to go as you can add nutrients to your soil every year and because the soil is all contained inside the beds, in a couple years you have a very fruitful soil.
- Small garden plot...just till a small area and plant your veggies in neat rows or squares.

How to Grow Plants INSIDE Your Home
Growing veggie plants INSIDE your home is not that much different from growing house plants, although there are several things to keep in mind.
When growing plants inside for food, and especially if you are using heirloom seeds, or survival seeds that you want to harvest for next year, you will want to do some research on how to pollinate your seeds.
When you have your garden outdoors, you can rely on the air and insects to pollinate your plants, but I am fairly sure you are not going to raise flies and bees indoors to do that for you... so make sure you learn more about that before getting too deep into soil and containers!
