Pandemic Preparation for H1N1 Virus
Or Whatever Pandemic Crisis we Face

When we hear of pandemic preparation one of the main questions is, pandemic-preparation "Is it contagious? And if so, HOW contagious is it and how does the virus spread from one person to another. These are very valid questions, especially if we have kids in school.

Many questions arise, regarding what kind of pandemic preparation one should take regarding the H1N1 flu virus.

CDC (Center for Disease Control) has determined that the H1N1 virus IS contagious and IS spreading from human to human.

However, at this time, it is not known HOW easily the virus spreads between people.

It seems to be a sneaky virus and for those of us with families, it is easy to feel alarmed.

Being Prepared for ANY Virus

I think it is good to be prepared on some sort of emergency preparedness level, if nothing else - it gives us peace of mind to know that we are ready for whatever may happen on a widespread scale!

Having a simple first aid kit on hand of some sort will also help in being prepared for come what may.

In fact, it is becoming almost a necessity to have some sort of urban survival plan in place and if you don't have one yet, make sure you visit our URBAN SURVIVAL HANDBOOK PAGE HERE...

Signs and Symptoms of the H1N1 Virus

The symptoms of this new H1N1 flu virus in most cases are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. Also, like seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associatede with the swine-flu as it is often called.

How does this new H1N1 virus spread?

Spread of this H1N1 virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads.

Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza.

Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

First and foremost, it is important to take these everyday pandemic preparation steps to protect your health:

These are steps we should all have learned as kids!

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

  • Avoid close contact with sick people outside your family members, especially if you have reason to believe they may be a target for the H1N1 virus.

  • Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.

Outside of these common precautions, you may want to consider emergency preparedness, such as stockpiling some food, and having emergency kits on hand, just in case there would be a city lock-down of a couple days.
