These Little Fire Starters are The Bomb!
One magnesium fire starter should provide enough shavings to start literally dozens of fires, and is perfect for any bug out bag, emergency backpack or survival kit.
The ability to build a survival fire can make a huge difference in your means to survive any situation.
Hopefully you have a good survival knife in your pack, too, as you will need it for starting fires, along with almost every other area in survival!.
Here is a great article on How to Build Fires Outdoors with very basic instructions on how to make a fire whether it’s in your new wood stove or outdoors.
How to Use the Fire Starters
Using your knife, scrape along the edge of the starter till you have a pile of shavings about the size of a quarter.
If you are in a windy area, you will want to make a small depression in the ground or something so your shavings don’t blow away. It is a good idea to try to shave them onto a small piece of bark or wood.
On the other side of your starter there should be a flint.
Make sure you have your tinder and kindling ready before you strike the flint.
As you run your knife along the flint side to create sparks, you will want your tinder close to the pile of shavings and have some small twigs and also some bigger pieces of wood close by as well.
It is no fun to have the tinder blazing and then go out as you scramble to find dry pieces of wood to add to your fire!
Practice using your magnesium fire starter BEFORE you get into an emergency situation, as practice makes perfect, even in building survival fires!
SURVIVAL FIRE STARTING TIP: If fine tender or dry kindling is not
available, you can use the following: parts of your personal clothing
(pocket lining, candy bar paper wrapers, hankerchief, etc), vehicle
upholstery, car air filter, or drain some oil from vehicle (snowmoble,
quad-runner, etc) and place in a hubcap, metal bowl or bowl shaped rock,
soak rags with oil and ignite (will also create a smoke signal)
