Will I Want to EAT The Food I am Storing Up?
When we think of survival foods and beginning to stockpile food, there are several questions we need to ask ourselves.
Questions such as:
- Will I want to EAT the foods that I am storing away…?
- Do I want JUST enough to survive?
- ….. or do I want to enjoy eating my stockpile of food.
There is no value in storing up groceries that we don’t LIKE or eat NOW.
Make sure you are spending your precious dollars on things you are going to NEED and that you will ENJOY eating and cooking.
We have added an Emergency Food List page with a grocery list that will be a HUGE help in getting started stockpiling foods for survival…

Some other things to think about when we are planning our survival food storage are…
- How easy is your stockpiled food to prepare?
- Will you be able to prepare it even in difficult times?
- Does purchasing it fit into your budget?
- And of course, the question of “Will I want to eat it if there is no emergency food shortage within the next twenty years??
I have to admit that there are a few things in my cupboard that I will ONLY eat if there is an emergency! 🙂
And it will not be good to enter a food shortage crisis with only outdated food on the shelves! Visit our page here on—->Food Shortage and How to Prepare
Food Program That Fits OUR Situation
First, determine whether you only need an emergency 72 hour plan, or a 6 month supply of emergency food storage, a year’s worth of food or whether you want to have an ongoing and long term plan.
With the ever pressing danger of a coming food shortage in America, you WILL want to have SOME sort of preparedness plan in motion….
We highly recommend having a plan that will help you survive for a month, and if you do not have one yet, make sure to visit our URBAN SURVIVAL HANDBOOK page to learn more about that….
A Few Other Things to Think About:
Different KINDS of Foods to Stockpile
There are advantages and disadvantages to almost any method of food storage and here are a few of them for you.
Grocery Store/Bulk foods
- Advantages: Canned/boxed and easy to prepare.
- Disadvantages: Some items don’t have a very long shelf life.
Freeze Dried Foods
- Advantages: Already prepared… just add a little water, heat or eat cold….Up to 20 year shelf life
- Disadvantages: Cost
MRE’s (Ready to Eat Meals
- Advantages: Already prepared, open and eat, 5 year shelf life.
- Disadvantages: Cost
Dehydrated Foods
- Advantages:Affordable and stores well in air tight containers with long shelf life….Up to 20 years shelf life.
- Disadvantages:More difficult to prepare, requires water, heat and fuel to prepare…. May not taste like you’re use to.
Survival Gardening
- Advantages:Fresh and healthy…. Inexpensive…. Tastes good.
- Disadvantages: Weeding — depending on how you look at it!
I think weeding can be a great stress reliever myself :)….and it is seasonal
Fast Food
- Advantages: Tastes good! (TOO good most of the time!)
- Disadvantages: Expensive and may not be available all the time.
Some Final Recommendations:
Store some of everything.
Don’t just buy wheat and powered milk as survival foods and think “Life will be great!”
If you have the money and like the convenience of already prepared foods, store Freeze Dried and MREs.
If you are on a tight budget, buy a little extra each time you go to the grocery store…Like buying a few extra bottles of ketchup, salad dressing, or anything that you know you use a lot of, whenever they come on sale.
Plant a garden, avoid fast food, in fact… whenever you are tempted to eat out, use that money and buy something to add to your food storage supply!
