Could It Happen Again?
With the pneumonic plague causing quarantine in China (as of this writing 8/09) it causes everyone to do research and think about emergency preparedness again.
With the swine flu scare not so pressing anymore, this new pandemic has reason to alarm us.
Because the pneumonic disease is spread through the air, there are some simple ways to protect yourself and the CDC (Center of Disease Control) has advice on that. I’ll just link to it here rather than try to rewrite everything they say.
Here is the link for CDC.
What we focus on here at Emergency-Survival-Skills website are simple ways to prepare for something like this.
Basic Skills to Prepare for Anything
Being prepared for anything in the survival arena will help us be prepared for a pandemic crisis as well. Here are a few scenarios that we should be prepared for:
- how to ride out a city lockdown.
- …how to stockpile foods.
- …The importance of safe drinking water….
- …What to keep in a bug out bag or 72 hour survival kit

Symptoms of Pneumonic Plague
Some of the first signs of the plague are:
- fever
- headache
- weakness
- rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pains, coughing, and even bloody sputum
Without early treatment – people can die from it.
According to the CDC, there is no vaccine available in the US at this time so taking precautions is important.
One suggestion would be to somehow get several weeks supply of antibiotic treatment and stick it in your first aid kit, along with masks, of course.
This may be a new idea to some of you, but sometimes (especially if you have pets) you can get antibiotics from the veteranarian easier than the doctor…pretend it is for your pet and stick it away for emergencies.
In case of a city lockdown or quarantine because of a pandemic emergency, you know as well as I do, that it will be no easy task to get to a doctor!
Your main concern should be to prepare yourself and your family for urban survival. It will save you a TON of panic and discomfort to be ready no matter what!
